The First Civilian Jeeps
Willys-Overland Motors was the manufacturer awarded an Army contract to produce the iconic MB Jeep during WWII. Towards the end of the war, Willys-Overland developed the idea of going beyond military grade vehicles by producing Jeeps for civilian use, starting a revolution that launched the CJ series.
Uses
When Willys-Overland Motors began manufacturing their civilian Jeep model, they started by marketing it for industrial and agricultural uses like ranching and farming. However, CJ2A models ended up becoming popular with the public for everyday driving beyond labor.
Features
The original Willys MB Jeep used in WWII is the forerunner of the CJ2A. The CJ2A resembles the Willys MB in the exterior in basic shape and dimensions. Primary changes come from
the completely new grille, the addition of a tailgate and mounted spare tire on its side. On the other hand, many features still separate the models. Differences include:
One of the differences that stands out the most is the headlights on the civilian Jeep. The headlights on the CJ2A are flush-mounted on the grille and are much larger than those on the Willys MB.
While the MB Jeep was built with a nine-slot grill, the CJ2A was manufactured with seven.
While the MB held a T-84 transmission, the CJ2A was built with a T-90. The robust engine stayed essentially the same.
